From C to B

An interpreter's journey into the English language

From C(lumsy) to B(etter) English…

A few years ago I started writing a blog in Dutch (it can be found here) about translation and interpretation. I enjoy the process of writing and sharing. For the last few months I’ve played with the idea of lauching a blog in English as well. First of all for the sheer pleasure of writing in a foreign language but also in order to get in touch with a much wider range of people. After all, my potential readership in Dutch is limited to only 23 million people whereas the pool of English readers is much bigger!

Joking aside, the reason why I decided to take the plunge is simple. After giving it some thought, I came to the conclusion that improving my English would be the logical next step in my career! My current combination is French A, Dutch B, English and Spanish C ,so having English as an active language would significantly improve my chances on the private market (I also work for the EU in Brussels as a freelancer). Moreover, after recently adding Spanish as a C language I needed a new challenge!

I am very well aware of the difficulty such a challenge entails. It requires dedication, discipline, patience, talent, willpower, passion and many other qualities, most of which are completely foreign to me. This blog is part of the learning process. I hope to improve my skills by writing here and, in the mean time, I’d like to share with (future) colleagues and the growing community of  blogging translators and interpreters.
